What does it mean to be healthy?
This looks different for everyone. Some people think that being healthy is all a matter of the kinds of food you eat, and how much of it you eat in a day. Others may think being healthy is a matter of how often you exercise. The truth is, being healthy varies from person to person because the idea of what is considered healthy looks different on everyone.
My healthy may not be the same as your healthy, and there are a lot of factors to take into consideration when thinking about this.
However, I do think that there are common themes that exist for what it means to be healthy. These themes, or healthy habits, are all a part of what most would consider to be a healthy lifestyle. As you may or may not know, living a healthy lifestyle is more than just a decision that you wake up and decide to make one day. It’s a commitment and this is because it really does require you to make a lot of changes in various areas of your life.
While these themes are most certainly things that you can adopt right now, adopting them doesn’t necessarily mean that you are now officially living a healthy lifestyle. It just means that you are taking the necessary baby steps to get there. But enough about that, are you wondering what those healthy habits are? Well sit tight because we are going to discuss those habits on the blog today!

They hydrate
Hydration is so important. Being properly hydrated will do wonders for your health. Not only does it help us achieve a healthy skin complexion, increase our brain power, and promote better sleep, but it directly impacts our overall health. One of the biggest and most impactful ways is through your appetite and learning how to be a mindful eater.
You know how doctors, fitness gurus, and wellness coaches are always telling you to drink plenty of water during the day? Especially right before eating a meal. Well it turns out that there is a reason for this. Drinking water can help curb your appetite. When you fill your body up with water, you eat less than you usually would during the day.
Since you’re not eating as much food, you’re allowing for other functions of the body to happen. This includes things such as proper digestion of your food, bowel movements to happen without force, and it even promotes mindful eating. A lot of the time when we eat, we do it because it’s routine. For most people this routine consists of eating breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks in-between every meal.
Most people are also not mindful eaters which is why we all have a set routine for when we eat, and how much we eat. Mindful eaters are individuals who mindfully eat their food by experiencing every bite they take. They experience the smell, the quantity on their plate, the way the food tastes in their mouth, how it feels traveling to their stomach, and most importantly when their body is telling them they are full. This is something that can easily be implemented at the dinner table at any given time. The trick is to eliminate all distractions so that you are focusing on the food you are eating.
However, what if I told you that you could still achieve all the amazing benefits of eating like a hardcore health nut without the mindful eating process? Believe it or not you can. The secret literally is to just drink water! A lot of the time when our stomach is telling us we are hungry we may in fact not be hungry. Our stomach may simply be telling us we need to put something inside of it, such as water.
Drinking plenty of water can curb your appetite which will help with weight loss, less feelings of starvation or hunger during the day, it can help with eliminating midnight eating if you’re a midnight eater, and an array of other health problems. It’s the easiest habit on this list that you can start implementing in your life today. All you need to get started is a water bottle.

They consistently move
One thing healthy people do consistently is move throughout the day. This is beyond exercising. They are constantly on the move and very rarely ever sit still for more than an hour at a time during the day. Again, this is not the same as exercising, instead it’s the intentional decision to simply move every hour.
Moving could literally be anything from getting up and going on a 10 minute walk every hour, to participating in various activities that require movement, like walking your dog.
If you are someone who struggles with movement throughout the day there are a couple of things you can do to help increase your daily movement. One thing that I highly recommend is finding a fun hobby that you can commit to doing as often as possible. Whether that’s every day, every other day, or just once a week, find that hobby and do it as often as you can.
This can be taking dance lessons, going to water aerobics, hiking every weekend, taking a Pilates class, doing yoga, training for a marathon, or whatever you find joy and passion in. Finding a hobby or two that requires movement is going to transform your health for the better. It’s like a low impact exercise that requires little to no effort that you can do routinely.
Consistently moving will not only help you slowly shed pounds, but it will also help you strengthen your muscles and tone your body. This is also a great way to meet new people who will encourage and possibly inspire you to try new things that may be outside of your comfort zone. It’s another way you can expand your hobbies or physical activity interests while still working towards your health goals.

They eat natural foods
This is a big one!
Eating food is such a touchy topic and honestly, I understand why. It almost seems like no matter who you are or the type of foods that you eat, there’s always someone out there judging you for your choices. And you’re not wrong, there is.
What does it mean to eat healthy? Well, a health expert (which I am not) will tell you that this means you eat lean meats, foods that are high in protein, foods that are not processed, and if you have the option always go organic.
While I personally don’t disagree with this, I also believe that this is not all there is to eating healthy. I think eating healthy is really a matter of what fuels your body in ways that you want it to be fueled. What foods give you energy? What foods help you sleep better at night? What foods help you remain consistent with your weight? Most importantly, what foods do you actually enjoy eating?
There needs to be a balance with all the foods that you eat. While the best option, in order to achieve your desired health results faster, is to swear off junk and processed foods, it’s not your only option. However, you should be doing your best to include more natural foods in your diet. What do I mean by natural foods? Natural foods are whole foods that have been provided to us by nature.
This includes foods such as various fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and beans. Of course, in order to start living a healthier lifestyle you don’t only have to eat these foods, but you should make a habit of eating more of these foods on a daily basis. Natural foods have undergone very little, if any, processing or treatment to provide the quality of flavor that we all know and love.
Instead, these foods are usually served to the human population the same way they are gathered from mother Earth. The easiest way to implement this healthy habit into your life is to start buying and eating more fruits and vegetables. If possible, go organic, but you most certainly don’t have to in order to start that healthy lifestyle. Instead, start by making it a goal to have one fruit and one vegetable a day.

They have a consistent sleeping schedule
A lot of the time when we think about sleep, and we think about our health, we don’t think about them as a pair. Turns out, our quality of sleep greatly impacts our quality of health. What this means is that the greater quality of sleep we are getting every night, the healthier we are on the inside and the outside.
An in case you thought you’ve been reading this wrong the whole time, you have not. There is a difference between the quality of sleep you get, and the quantity, or numbers of hours of sleep you get. Healthy people put more focus on the quality of their sleep and not necessarily the number.
This is something new for me that I have been working hard on improving this past month. It can be hard to get quality sleep when you’ve spent all day exhausting yourself and all you literally want to do is sleep. However, you have to force yourself to take that little bit of extra time in the day to create a consistent sleeping routine for you.
Maybe this is showering, meditating, and doing skincare before hopping in the bed and going to sleep. Or maybe it’s decompressing and turning off your mind by reading for at least 30 minutes before going to sleep. Whatever this may look like for you just be aware of the various small activities that you can do before bed that will help you get a better rest at night.
Putting in the extra time to unwind and relax before bed will help you get a better quality of sleep every night, despite the number of hours you get, and prepare you for a better and more energized day.

They commit to a healthy lifestyle
Finally, they commit to a healthy lifestyle. This basically just means that they have made a habit of everything we have discussed on this list, plus much more. This is not an easy thing to achieve for everyone because as mentioned earlier, it really does require you to make changes in various areas of your life. However, that doesn’t mean that it’s possible.
Just know that should you decide to commit to a healthier lifestyle it’s not something that will happen overnight. You will need to do your research in order to really understand what you are committing to. You’re going to have to decide what foods are best for you diet, what’s an appropriate amount of movement for a day for you, and much more.
Afterwards it’s a matter of just simply committing. Sounds overwhelming but I promise it’s not.
