It’s summer!
I’ll admit it’s not my favorite season, but I really do enjoy being out in the sunshine and relaxing in the warm weather. However, when it gets way too hot outside, I have to be indoors. I can’t stand the heat like that. Thankfully summer has not been off to a burning start. Instead, it’s been a very pleasant warm outside, which I love because it gives me a reason to be out and about engaging in some fun summertime activities.
Over the summer I usually like to stay indoors reading a good book for most of the day. I also love, love, love watching movies and binge-watching TV shows at night during the summertime. Something about it just makes it all seem a bit more…vibe worthy. If that makes any sense ha-ha.
This summer however, I’m choosing to switch it up a little. I’m still going to be indoors reading, watching movies and TV shows for most of the summer, but I’m also going to do my best to be a little bit more active.
I’m putting a heavy focus on my health and wellness this season. One of my health and wellness goals for this year was to be more active. Whether this meant walking more, doing more cardio, or just getting out and moving my body, I want to increase my daily level of physical activity. So, in addition to participating in some of my favorite and traditional summertime activities, I’m also going to try to get out as much as I can and soak up the sun.
Curious to know more? I hope so because I’m excited to share! Continue reading below to check out some of my favorite health and wellness summer activities, as well as some new ones I’m excited to try!

- Long walks
There’s nothing better than going for a nice long walk in the summer. May this be a walk in the park, a walk around your neighborhood, or maybe just a walk to random destinations, you really can’t go wrong this summertime activity. I personally like to go on long walks either early in the morning or in the evening after dinnertime. However, there’s nothing wrong with going for a walk during the day too.
Just so long as you get out and you get those legs moving! Not only will you burn calories without even trying, but this is also a great way to decompress, clear your mind, and plan out more fun activities to do this summer.
- Workout outside
Not something that I like to do personally, but I think it’s a great way to wake yourself up in the morning. This doesn’t have to be anything excessive either. You can do a couple of squats outside, maybe some push-ups, or even go for a mini jog or sprint walk. It can even be something as simple as doing your warm up before your workout, or a cool down after your workout.
- Plant a garden
This is something that I am planning on doing this summer! There are a lot of positive benefits that you can get out of planting your own garden. Some of those benefits include growing your favorite fruits and vegetables in your own backyard, spending quality time outside, and keeping your mind and your spirit active by having something fun and meaningful to focus on. Not only will you be inspired to eat healthier, but you’ll have a reason to get outside and do something constructive at least once a week.
You can also go the extra mile to make your garden look pretty by planting some of your favorite flowers as well! Afterall, a garden is more than just fruits and vegetables.
My favorite flower is the sunflower. What’s yours?
- Take the littles to the playground
Another favorite activity of mines is taking the littles to the playground to play. Not only will the kids have a chance to burn some of that built up energy (where do they get it from?), but you will also have a chance to either engage in play and get in a good workout without even trying, or engage in some self-care activity of your choosing.
Depending on the age of your little one and whether or not they have an older sibling, you can find a nice shady bench and journal your thoughts for the day, or read a good book.
If you’re looking for a good book to read, I recommend Girl Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis. I love this book it’s so inspiring and is such a good read! I feel like every woman should read this book.

- Go swimming
Who doesn’t love a good swim every now and then? You can either enjoy a nice day at your local swimming pool with the kids, your family, and friends, or totally set up a swimming station all your own at your house! Honestly, when it comes to water as a cool down from the summertime heat nobody is complaining about how they get it. Get creative and find fun ways to be cool for the summer.
Also, if you’re lucky enough to live in a state or city where you have access to beaches, go spend a day at the beach! Soak up that sun and let the cool breeze of the ocean cool you down. Have fun while the summer is here.
- Go bike riding
There’s nothing more freeing than going for a bike ride. This can be around your neighborhood or you can find a bike trial in a forest or park somewhere and travel along it for a while. Either way it’s the perfect activity to participate in this summer. It will help you burn calories as well as strengthen your leg muscles. Talk about completing leg day in style!
- Go hiking
Definitely on the bucket list! Gather your family, close friends, or even your doggies and go for a hike. This is a great way to get out and be a part of mother nature while also getting in some good cardio for the day.
- Go play with the littles in an open field
One of my favorite activities is taking the littles and our two fur babies to the park to play in the open field. Play kickball, baseball, catch, or just run around with the littles. You can also take a small tennis ball or your fur baby’s favorite toy and toss it around in the park. Afterall, dogs need love and exercise too! Just get out and get moving, kids and dogs will literally find fun and excitement in the tiniest of movements.
- Have a picnic
While it’s not something that I do all the time it’s something that I like to do every now and then. Get the family together and go have lunch in the park. You can go the complete picnic route by getting a blanket to lay out on the grass, and a cute little picnic basket to carry your food in. Or you can do what my family and I like to do and just get a nice table cloth that you don’t mind getting dirty, find a table in the park (or bring your own), set it up and proceed to eat your lunch.
- Go camping
Now here is something that I can’t wait to take part in! Go camping with your family for a weekend. If you’re a true outdoorsy type of person then go the mountains, the nearest forest, or if you have specific camping grounds go there and create memories that will last a lifetime. Or, if you’re anything like me and you want your littles to have the camping experience but time isn’t really on your side, set up camp in your backyard!
The goal here is to sleep in a tent, build a fire, roast marshmallows, and sleep under the stars. So, in all reality you can camp anywhere, but if you want the authentic camping experience, head somewhere where you will be closer to the stars. Otherwise your backyard will do the job just fine.
- Water balloons
Sometimes there’s literally nothing more enjoyable than buying some balloons from the dollar store, filling them up with water, and proceeding to have a water balloon fight! You can do this at the park, in an open field, or in your very own front yard! This is a great activity to get all your family members, your neighbors, and sometimes (when it’s safe) strangers looking for something fun to do involved.
- Take up nature photography
One of my favorite things to do is to get out in nature and capture its beauty. I take pictures of literally anything and everything nature related. Flowers, trees, plants, and even the grass if the sun is hitting it beautifully. While my goal isn’t to take professional pictures of any kind, I just like to capture moments in nature that brought me genuine happiness while I was adventuring for the day.
It’s a fun activity to do to decompress and step away from social media and technology for an hour or two.

- Make fruit popsicles
This is easily one of my favorite activities! Have you ever made popsicles at home with foods that you love the most? If not, well you’re missing out! I like to get fresh fruit from the store, cut them up, and add them to an ice popsicle tray. To hold it altogether just add some juice of your choice, I personally love grape juice. Then pop it in the freezer! It’s as simple as that. You can even blend a bunch of different fruits together and freeze it like that, skipping out on the juice.
Not only will you love this, but the littles will too. A plus it’s more on the healthy side treats. As an extra special adult treat only, add your favorite wine (replace with the juice).
- Go to the farmers market
Who doesn’t love fresh fruits and vegetables? As part of your health and wellness journey make a point to visit your local farmers market. Farmers markets are great because they literally have the freshest foods for the week available for you right there on the spot. Plus, most of the time they’re all organic and literally are coming from the grounds of the farm straight to your basket for your pleasure.
Healthy eating doesn’t get any better than that!
- Do yoga outside
I love yoga! While I do prefer to do it indoors, I’ve also gotten many invitations to participate in yoga outside. The only reason I have yet to do this is because my schedule gets so busy that I’m not able to attend the event. However, something I should take note of is that you don’t have to attend a yoga class to do yoga outside. The reality is all you need is your yoga mat, an instructor video of some sort which you can easily find on YouTube (if needed), and your water bottle.
So, I guess the moral of the story here is it’s easy to do yoga outside on your own time. Try to aim for the time of day when it’s coolest. That may be early in the morning or later in the evening, to avoid overheating. Yes people, yoga will make you sweat!
- Do water aerobics
I mean enough said. If you’re not big on swimming but would still like to burn some calories and get in a good workout in the water, then water aerobics is the way to go. You can find most classes at your local rec center, and usually every class is for a decent price (like no more than $30). Of course, it’s ran by an instructor and classes are usually no longer than an hour. What a fun way to get fit and healthy!

- Have a BBQ
Simply put get together with your closest families and friends and have a cookout. Buy everyone’s favorite foods (as well as some healthy choices), put on good music, have appropriate entertainment for the littles, and just enjoy everyone’s company! If you really want to get in a good ab workout during a BBQ try to limit as much seating as possible. This way you and your guests will be doing more standing than sitting.
You’ll burn more calories this way!
- Play fetch with your dog
Do you have a fur baby? If so here’s something fun for you and your dog to do. Play fetch. Literally all you need is a ball or frisbee, or even their favorite toy, and a big open field. Throw the toy and watch them fetch it. Or increase the fun and the workout by running with them to get the toy. Not only will this motivate your dog to get in on the fun, but you’ll be burning calories as well too.
- Take part in a sport
Totally not a sports person but I do love a good friendly game of playing. Sometimes I like to get together with my brothers and the littles and play football (yes, I suck) or soccer. Or if you live by a beach go play some beach volleyball! Even if you don’t, find a court that you can go to and enjoy the sport. Other sports that are fun to take part in during the summer is tennis, golf, and even baseball.
- Make fruit smoothies
Literally my favorite thing ever! I love making smoothies. In fact, I make them all the time. While I do like to make smoothies to have after I’ve completed a workout, I can’t deny that I also like to make them just to have as a tasty snack during the day. All you need are fruits and/or veggies of your choice, milk of your choice (if you like milk in your smoothies), and in some cases ice. Blend it all together and enjoy!
