There are so many things that I find inspiration in. I find inspiration in people, in art, in books, in movies, and most certainly in music. Music is such a big influence in my life. I turn to music for guidance, for emotional support, for understanding, motivation, and inspiration. Music is about so much more than just bringing pleasure to the ears and uplifting your spirit. There’s a story to be told, an emotional connection to be made, and a realization of something for you to discover.
I love music and I always try to never put a limit on its potential. Like most people I have my favorite artists. The artists I consider to be my go-to, the artists that I follow and keep as up to date with as I possibly can because I’m always looking forward to their new projects.
I also have songs that I stumble upon and find inspiration in as well, which often times leads me diving deeper into that artist. The bottom line, I love music and I listen to A LOT of it. Every time I listen to music it’s almost impossible for me to not make an emotional connection to the song and lyrics. It always feels as though someone has taken a stroll in my shoes, saw a moment in my life from my perspective, and brought to life the words that I was not able to find.
So, I thought I’d share 5 songs that I find inspiration in. Songs that uplift me, re-center me, and always help me find the strength to continue to push forward in life.
Five songs I find inspiration in:
- Miley Cyrus – The Climb
- JoJo – Keep on Keepin’ On
- Kelly Clarkson – Stronger
- Logic – Till the End
- Rachel Platten – Fight Song
Miley Cyrus: I absolutely love Miley. I love everything about her from her emotional ballads to her free spirit. She’s a woman of her own mind, she knows who she is, and she’s not afraid to express herself in any fashion she finds reasonable. I have nothing but mad respect for people like this.
Her song the climb really resonates with my ability to keep moving forward. I’m a firm believer that experiences in our past define the people we are in the future. This song speaks the truth to my soul about not letting my past be the one thing that holds me back from walking into my future. They lyrics of this song are like the light at the end of the tunnel. Sometimes when we put a lot of hard work into something and we are forced to wait for the end result, especially when it’s something that we have a great passion for, we tend to get very impatient. At least I do.
This song grounds me and reminds me that everything amazing we do has an unspoken formula behind it. There is a process that is created and followed through. There will be obstacles that find their way into our paths, there will be many roads to travel, and many corners to make before we get where we’re going. It’s not about how fast we get there (see what I did there!?) or what we hope to get out of it. It’s all about the climb, the journey, the story behind the greatness that we create. I find inspiration in this song to slow down and pace myself while on my journey.
JoJo: JoJo is by far one of my favorite artists and I’m so happy she’s back in the music game (though she never left, she was just on a really long hiatus). Her song Keep on Keepin’ on which was on her first studio album just speaks volumes of what it means to get back up every time you fall. There are times when we fall…and we fall…and we fall again. Sometimes we get so tired of falling, that the next time we do we just want to stay down. But if we do we leave ourselves to wonder what could have been if we just got back up again. That’s not an awesome feeling, neither is falling down time and time again. But it’s not about the number of times we fall, it’s about how many times we choose to get back up.
I know what it feels like when you put your all into something just to watch it crumble right before your face. Any human being who has a dream, who has a heart, who has a soul, their own thoughts and emotions, and personal goals in life knows this feeling. When I think back on all the times I got knocked down, I can always say I found a reason to get back up. I find inspiration in this song to not give up on the things that matter to me. No matter how many tries it may take, the fact that I continue to try until I have achieved it is all that matters.
Kelly Clarkson: Another favorite artist of mines. This song is my spirit song! I know the lyrics are more reflective of finding your voice and your strength after a break-up, but I find so much more inspiration that just that. This song is the reason that I have yet to give up on my dreams. It’s hard chasing after things that are not within your reach, things that you can so clearly picture but can’t necessary claim as your own.
When I listen to this song I find that fire inside that died out for a while. I find the strength to stand tall once again, and the courage to push forward with my goals. It’s a saying I’ve heard my whole life, and I’m sure most of you have as well. “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” No matter how many times I’m humiliated, how many times I fail, how many times I get the door slammed in my face, if I am able to walk (or sometimes crawl) away, and I can find the energy to let those tears of disappointment fall, then I am strong enough to collect myself once more and continue the battle. I find inspiration in this song in knowing that I am stronger because of my failures.
Logic: Love this guy. Absolutely love him. He. Is. Everything. Everything music is meant to be and so much more. He is one of my spirit celebrities and this song is my jam on any given day, in any given moment, during any given time. It’s by far my favorite song on his first album, and easily one of my favorite songs of all time. Though Logic comes from a background that I can’t really relate to, it’s his struggle, his story, and his perseverance that bleeds through every song he has ever written that connects me to him. This song is no different.
It speaks the truth about what it means to not sell yourself short. Know your worth, understand your talent, know the direction you want your future to go, and understand the necessary steps to get you there. Above all trust your gut, make mistakes, and turn your story into something great. The lyrics are pure, the lyrics are cutthroat, and they are honest. I find inspiration in the song in how it reminds me that our lives are meant to be lived in order to tell a story that others can find an emotional connection to. If we are to achieve great things, we have to allow ourselves to be great, and for some that means living through the bad, fighting through the struggle, and wearing your battle scars as body armor until the very end.
Rachel Platten: This song is literally my fight song! I just find so much emotional and personal connection to the lyrics. This song speaks of a journey to be taken. A journey that has your name written all over it and is waiting for you to put one foot in front of the other, and set out to share your story with the world.
I spend a lot of my time writing down ideas, creating goals for myself, and secretly executing how I am going to present them to the world. I find inspiration in this song in knowing that one of the greatest factors to being successful in life no matter what you do, is to always remain humble. This song confirms the fact every goal we have in life must go through multiple revisions before there is a final product within sight, and most certainly before something can be deemed as complete.
Life is full of surprises, and that’s a good thing. But it’s how we react to the surprises, how we approach the possibilities we are faced, and how we accept the opportunities presented to us, that creates an inspiration within ourselves to take those leaps of faith.
Music is the same way. I am always surprised with the artist, the genre of music, and specific lyrics in a song that jumps out to me, latches on, and pulls me in for me. Music is so relatable on so many levels and that’s why I am able to always find inspiration within it. The beautiful thing about music is that it is universal and it speaks one language, and that language is love. And who doesn’t love the way being loved makes you feel? Nobody.
So, when you find inspiration, no matter where it comes from, hold on tight and don’t let it go. You never know the greatness that may unfold.
